The cost of a website in Tanzania depends mainly on how many pages you need, how custom the design is, whether you need features like online payments or bookings, and who writes the content and takes the photos. On top of the one-off build, there are yearly costs for the domain and hosting, plus optional monthly maintenance. A simple business website costs far less than an online store with hundreds of products.

When people ask us "how much is a website?", the honest answer is a few questions back. These are the things that decide the price.

What are the parts of a website's cost?

ItemHow it's paidWhat changes the price
Domain nameYearly.co.tz or .com, and the registrar
HostingMonthly or yearlyTraffic, storage, speed and support
Design and buildOne-offNumber of pages, custom design, features
ContentOne-offWhether you supply text and photos or we create them
Payments or bookingsSetup plus transaction feesWhich gateway and how many payment options
Business emailMonthly or yearly, per userNumber of mailboxes
MaintenanceOptional monthlyHow often you need updates

Number of pages

A one-page site with your services, photos and a WhatsApp button is the cheapest option and often all a new business needs. A typical business site has five or six pages: home, about, services, a few examples of work, and contact. Each extra page adds design and writing time.

Template or custom design

A template is quicker and cheaper but can look like many other sites. A custom design is built around your brand and your customers, which takes more time. A middle path, a clean design adapted to your brand, works well for most small businesses.

Features

Every feature adds work: online payments with mobile money and cards, booking calendars, multiple languages, member logins, product filters, delivery calculations. Start with what you need to make sales now. You can add more later.

Content and photos

If you send your own text and good photos, the build is faster and cheaper. If you need copywriting, a photo shoot or product photography, that's extra, but it's often what makes the biggest difference to how the site performs.

Hosting and domain

These are small but ongoing. Cheap hosting can be slow, and a slow site loses visitors on mobile data. Pay for decent hosting and renew the domain on time. Our guide to registering a .co.tz domain explains the domain side.

Maintenance

Someone needs to keep software up to date, back up the site, fix things that break and make small changes. You can do it yourself, or pay for a monthly care plan. Skipping it entirely is how websites get hacked or quietly stop working.

How to avoid paying twice

  • Get a written quote that lists exactly what's included.
  • Make sure the domain is registered in your business's name, not the developer's.
  • Ask who owns the website and its files when the project ends.
  • Ask what happens if you need changes after launch, and what they cost.
  • Check a few websites the designer has already built, on your phone.

Types of websites and how they differ in cost

The type of website you need has the biggest effect on price. Here's how the common types compare in effort, from lightest to heaviest:

TypeTypical contentsRelative effort
One-page siteServices, photos, contact and WhatsApp on a single pageLowest
Business website5 or 6 pages: home, about, services, work, contactLow to medium
Website with blogBusiness site plus a blog you can update yourselfMedium
Booking websiteHotels, clinics, salons, with a booking calendarMedium to high
Online storeProducts, cart, checkout, mobile money and card paymentsHigh
Custom web appLogins, dashboards, special featuresHighest

Questions to ask before you get a quote

You'll get more accurate quotes, and avoid surprises, if you can answer these questions first:

  • What should visitors do on the site: call, message, book, buy or request a quote?
  • How many pages do you think you need?
  • Will you provide the text and photos, or do you need help with them?
  • Do you need online payments, bookings or other features?
  • Do you already have a domain and logo?
  • Do you need more than one language?
  • When do you need it live?

Send the same answers to every designer you ask. Then you're comparing like with like.

What should be included in a website quote?

A good quote lists everything. If any of these are missing, ask:

  1. The pages and features that will be built.
  2. Who provides the content, and how many rounds of changes are included.
  3. Whether the domain, hosting and email are included, and for how long.
  4. Mobile design, basic SEO and SSL.
  5. Training, so you can make simple edits yourself.
  6. What support looks like after launch, and what it costs.
  7. Who owns the website and domain at the end.
  8. The timeline and payment terms.

Hidden costs to watch for

  • Premium plugins or themes that renew yearly.
  • Website builder subscriptions in USD that rise with the exchange rate.
  • Payment gateway fees on each sale.
  • Stock photos that need paid licences.
  • Changes after launch charged by the hour.
  • Domain renewal at a higher price than the first year.

Is a cheaper website ever the right choice?

Yes. If you're testing a new idea or just need something credible online quickly, a simple one-page site is a smart, low-cost start. You can grow it later. What we'd avoid is a cheap site that's slow, hard to edit, or registered in someone else's name. Those end up costing more, because you pay for a second website when the first one fails.

How to think about value

Instead of asking "how much is a website?", ask "how many new customers would make it worth it?". If one new client is worth a lot to your business, a well-built site that brings in even a few enquiries a month pays for itself quickly. That's why we spend time on the things that turn visitors into enquiries: clear headlines, fast loading, prices, proof and an easy WhatsApp button. Our website checklist lists them all.

Example: two quotes compared

Imagine a guest house gets two quotes. The first is much cheaper: it includes a template site with five pages, but not the domain, hosting, booking system or photos, and changes after launch are charged by the hour. The second costs more: it includes the domain and hosting for a year, a booking form connected to WhatsApp, professional photos of the rooms, two rounds of changes and a month of support. On paper the first quote looks better. Once the owner adds the missing pieces, the difference is much smaller, and the second site is far more likely to bring bookings.

This is why we always list exactly what's included. The headline price tells you very little on its own.

Ongoing costs after launch

Plan for the yearly and monthly costs, not just the build. A simple way to budget is to list them in one place and set reminders:

CostHow oftenReminder
Domain renewalYearlyOne month before expiry
HostingMonthly or yearlyCheck the renewal price, not only the first-year offer
Business emailMonthly per userRemove accounts for staff who leave
Website builder or pluginsMonthly or yearly, often in USDWatch for exchange rate changes
Care plan or updatesMonthly, optionalReview what you actually used each quarter
Payment gateway feesPer transactionInclude them in your product prices

None of these is large on its own, but together they decide what your website really costs per year. Knowing that number makes it easier to judge whether the site is paying for itself.

Your plan for this week

  1. Answer the questions in the list above.
  2. Ask two or three designers for written quotes.
  3. Compare what's included line by line.
  4. Check websites each designer has built, on your phone.
  5. Confirm who will own the domain and site.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a website cost in Tanzania?

It depends on the number of pages, design, features and content. A simple one-page or five-page business site costs much less than an online store with payments. Ask for a fixed written quote.

Are there yearly costs after the website is built?

Yes. You pay yearly for the domain and usually monthly or yearly for hosting. Business email and maintenance are optional ongoing costs.

Why do website prices vary so much?

Quotes include very different things: template or custom design, who writes the content, whether photos are included, how many pages, and what support you get after launch.

Is a cheap website a bad idea?

Not always, but check what's included. Make sure the domain is in your name, the site works well on phones, and you can get changes made later.

Can I start small and add more later?

Yes, and it's often the smartest approach. Launch with the pages you need to get enquiries, then add features like payments or a blog once the site is working for you.

Do I have to pay for the whole website upfront?

Many designers ask for a deposit at the start and the balance at launch. Agree the payment terms in writing before work begins.

Can I pay monthly instead of a one-off price?

Some agencies and builders offer monthly plans. They can be easier on cash flow, but check the total cost over two or three years and what happens if you stop paying.
