To make a website in Tanzania, you need a domain name (for example yourbusiness.co.tz), hosting to keep the site online, the website itself, and the content that goes on it: text, photos, prices and contact details. You can build it yourself with a website builder, or hire a designer or agency. For a small business site, the whole thing can be done in one to two weeks if your content is ready.

We build websites for businesses in Dar es Salaam and abroad every month. These are the steps we follow, in order.

Step 1: Decide what the website is for

Before you think about colours, write down the one thing you want visitors to do. Send a WhatsApp message? Call? Book a room? Buy a product? Request a quote? That single goal shapes every page. A restaurant site needs the menu and location up front. A consultancy needs proof of past work and a clear way to book a meeting.

Step 2: Choose and register a domain name

Your domain is your address online. Most Tanzanian businesses choose .co.tz, which tells people you're a local company, or .com if you sell internationally. Keep it short, easy to spell, and close to your business name. Avoid hyphens if you can, because people forget them.

A .co.tz domain is registered through a registrar accredited by tzNIC, the organisation that manages .tz names. We cover it in detail in how to register a .co.tz domain.

Step 3: Decide who builds it

There's no wrong answer. If you have time and some patience, a builder is fine to start. If your time is worth more spent running the business, hire someone.

Step 4: Get hosting

Hosting is the computer that keeps your website online 24 hours a day. You can host in Tanzania or abroad. What matters most is speed, uptime and support. Many global hosting networks now have servers close to East Africa, so a well-built site loads quickly for visitors in Dar either way. Read more in our guide on what affects website cost.

Step 5: Prepare your content

This is where most projects stall. Gather these before anyone starts designing:

  • Your logo as a PNG or SVG file.
  • Real photos of your business, team, products or work.
  • A short description of each service or product, with prices if you can share them.
  • Phone, WhatsApp, email, location and opening hours.
  • Customer reviews or testimonials you can quote.

Write in the language your customers use. Many Tanzanian businesses do well with English plus key parts in Swahili.

Step 6: Design for phones first

Most visitors in Tanzania will see your site on a phone, often on mobile data. Big readable text, buttons that are easy to tap, a WhatsApp button that stays visible, and small, compressed images make a bigger difference than fancy animations.

Step 7: Add the features you need

Keep it simple at launch. Common extras for Tanzanian businesses are a WhatsApp chat button, Google Maps location, a contact or booking form, and online payments with mobile money and cards. We explain the payment side in how to accept mobile money on your website.

Step 8: Set up the SEO basics

Give each page a clear title and description, use headings properly, add alt text to images and create a sitemap. Then connect Google Search Console so Google knows your site exists. Our SEO guide goes further.

Step 9: Launch and tell people

Check every page on your phone, test the forms and buttons, and make sure the padlock (SSL) shows in the browser. Then put the link everywhere: Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile, Google Business Profile, email signature and printed materials.

Step 10: Keep it up to date

Update prices, photos and opening hours when they change, renew your domain and hosting on time, and back up the site. An out-of-date website can cost you more trust than having none at all.

What does a website need to work well in Tanzania?

A website built for Tanzanian customers has a few needs that templates from abroad often miss. People browse on phones, data is not free, and many buyers want to talk to a person before paying. That shapes the design.

How to write the words on your website

Many business owners find writing their own website harder than anything else in the project. A few rules make it easier:

  • Lead with what you do and where, in one sentence a stranger understands.
  • Write about the customer's problem before you write about your company.
  • Use short paragraphs and headings so people can skim on a phone.
  • Show proof: years in business, number of clients, photos of real work, reviews.
  • End each page with one clear action, like "Message us on WhatsApp" or "Get a quote".

If writing isn't your thing, record yourself explaining your business as if to a new customer, then turn that into text. It usually sounds more natural than anything you'd write from scratch.

Website builders compared

If you've decided to build the site yourself, these are the tools most people consider:

ToolBest forThings to know
WixSimple business sitesDrag and drop, monthly subscription in USD
SquarespaceDesign-focused sites, portfoliosPolished templates, fewer local payment options
ShopifyOnline storesStrong for selling, check which local payment gateways connect
WordPressFlexible sites and blogsVery flexible, needs hosting and regular updates

Prices and features change, so check each tool's current plans. Also check that you can connect your own .co.tz domain and that you can export or move your content later.

How to keep your website secure

Small business websites get hacked more often than people think, usually because of old software, weak passwords or a cheap plugin nobody updated. Use a strong unique password and two-step login wherever it's offered. Keep your website software and plugins updated. Make regular backups and store a copy somewhere other than your hosting account. If you use WordPress, install only the plugins you need, from developers who still update them.

How to get your first visitors

A new website doesn't get visitors on its own. In the first weeks, most of your traffic will come from places you already have: your Instagram bio, WhatsApp Status, your Google Business Profile, email signatures, business cards and word of mouth. Over time, Google starts sending visitors as well, especially if you publish useful pages. Our guides on SEO and Facebook and Instagram ads cover the next steps.

Mistakes we see on Tanzanian business websites

  • A phone number that isn't clickable, or a WhatsApp number that's out of date.
  • No prices anywhere, so visitors leave to ask a competitor.
  • Huge photos that take ages to load on mobile data.
  • Stock photos of people who obviously aren't the team.
  • A "latest news" section last updated three years ago.
  • The domain registered in the developer's name, so the owner can't renew it.

Avoid these and your site will already be better than most of your competitors'. That's a low bar, but it's a real advantage.

Your plan for this week

  1. Write down the one action you want visitors to take.
  2. Check if your preferred .co.tz and .com names are available.
  3. Decide whether you'll build it yourself or hire someone.
  4. Gather your logo, photos, services and prices in one folder.
  5. List the three websites you like most and note why.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make a website in Tanzania?

A small business website can be ready in about a week once the content is ready. Online stores and sites with bookings or many pages take longer.

Do I need a .co.tz domain or a .com?

If most of your customers are in Tanzania, .co.tz is a good choice and looks local. If you sell mainly abroad, .com may be easier for foreign customers. Many businesses register both.

Can I build a website myself?

Yes. Website builders like Wix, Squarespace and Shopify let you build one without code. It takes more of your time, and the result depends on your design and writing skills.

Do I need to host my website in Tanzania?

No. What matters is speed and reliability. A well-built site on good hosting loads quickly for Tanzanian visitors whether the servers are local or international.

Can my website accept M-Pesa and other mobile money?

Yes. Payment gateways that operate in Tanzania can connect mobile money and card payments to your website.

What should a small business website include?

At minimum: what you do, where you are, prices or a starting price, real photos, reviews, a WhatsApp button, a phone number and a contact form.

Can I make a website for free?

Some builders offer free plans, but they usually show the builder's branding and don't let you use your own domain. For a business, a paid plan or a professionally built site looks more credible.
